Chocolate Spice Cake
Delightful recipe for a Chocolate Spice Cake that combines the rich flavors of chocolate with warm spices.
Ingredients:
For the Cake:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup cocoa powder
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 4 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 1/2 cups buttermilk
For the Chocolate Spice Frosting:
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 2 cups confectioners’ sugar
- 1/2 cup cocoa powder
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
- 1/4 cup heavy cream
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions:
For the Cake:
- Preheat Oven:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- Sift Dry Ingredients:
- In a bowl, sift together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. Set aside.
- Cream Butter and Sugar:
- In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add Eggs and Vanilla:
- Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Mix in the vanilla extract.
- Alternate Dry Ingredients and Buttermilk:
- Gradually add the sifted dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with buttermilk. Begin and end with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
- Bake:
- Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans. Smooth the tops with a spatula.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
For the Chocolate Spice Frosting:
- Cream Butter and Sugar:
- In a separate bowl, cream together the softened butter and confectioners’ sugar until well combined.
- Add Cocoa and Spices:
- Add the cocoa powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves to the butter-sugar mixture. Mix until smooth and well incorporated.
- Add Cream and Vanilla:
- Gradually add the heavy cream and vanilla extract to the frosting. Beat until the frosting is light and fluffy.
Assembly:
- Frost the Cake:
- Once the cakes are completely cooled, spread a layer of the chocolate spice frosting on top of one cake layer.
- Place the second cake layer on top and frost the top and sides of the entire cake.

2 sticks unsalted butter, softened

1/4 cup cocoa, sifted
2 cups flour
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1/4 tsp allspice
1/4 tsp ground cloves
1 tsp cinnamon
Directions
- Preheat the oven to 350˚F (175˚C). Spray an 8-inch (at least 2-inch high) round cake pan with baking spray, rub inside surface of pan with a paper towel to cover evenly with the spray. If your cake pan is lower than 2-inches, use a 9-inch round cake pan). Line bottom of pan with parchment paper and spray parchment paper lightly. Set aside.
- In a medium-large bowl, combine the yogurt, sugar, and eggs, and whisk together until well blended.
Add the flour, baking powder, salt and spices and mix until all flour is combined.
Add the oil and stir well. Don’t worry, at first it will seem to separate but keep stirring till smooth.
Pour the batter into prepared pan.
Bake for 35-40 minutes, until the cake feels springy to the touch and a toothpick or cake tester inserted into the center comes out clean. Be careful not to overbake. - Cool cake on a wire rack for 10 minutes; then turn it out of the pan onto the rack.
